Update on the completion of the road improvements in Ardvasar
Added at 08:37 on 17 May 2025
Highland Council and their principal contractor have now completed the three day project to resurface the road between the Armadale junction and just below Homeleigh at the west end of the village.
SCC is aware of the disruption this has caused for residents, businesses, organisations and visitors over these past few days but has also dramatically improved the overall surface of the road. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Both the chair and secretary of the SCC wrote notes of thanks to the Council's Roads Manager for Skye, the area inspector, representatives of the contractor and elected member to send our appreciation, and that of the community, for the work done since Wednesday.
In a response to the secretary, the Roads Manager made a few points that we can pass on.
1. We had asked if clarification could be made of the start/end sections of other roads in Sleat that have been included in the Roads Capital Plan and for which we have published an extract for Sleat in earlier posts. At present the Council doesn't have a resource to provide such a facility, for example, on a map. For those that have seen the Plan for Skye and Raasay it is a substantial document and the areas for the south end are extensive. As reported a survey of the C1242 loop road was undertaken on Wednesday.
2. From Monday 19th May roads operatives will be working in the north of Skye on a wide range of road repairs following inspections in recent months. No dates are available for further work in the south of Skye yet, simply because HC only has about 15 of its own staff to undertake work. It is likely that Breedons will now resume their contracts with Transport Scotland on the trunk roads.
3. No white lining was done on HC roads for around 6 or 7 years prior to the appointment of the current roads manager and it has taken him 'around 14 months' to get approval for the lining that has been completed recently. Further white lining across the island will only be undertaken when there is sufficient work after tarrIng to make it financially viable. Contractors won't deploy to the island unless there is a considerable package of work, mobilisation costs are prohibitive including accommodation.
4. Grass verge cutting will begin in the coming weeks.
Whilst there are some gaps in sections of the road tarred this week we have no information as to whether these will be added or it could be that the old surface is considered acceptable.
