28/11/2017   |  North & West Highland

A drop-in event to allow residents to have a look at the preliminary designs for the new hospital ‘Hub’ in Broadford is planned for Wednesday 13th December 2017.

On the day there will be technical representatives from the design team available to explain the initial design ideas for the new healthcare facility for communities of Skye, Lochalsh and South West Ross. The facility is to be sited on land adjacent to Dr MacKinnon Memorial Hospital.

The event, which will be held at Broadford Hotel between 2.30pm-7.30pm, will also be an opportunity to explain the design process going forward where NHS Highland will be seeking further views on the building, access arrangements and use of outdoor space.

In June 2017 the architects for the proposed new hospital for communities of Skye, Lochalsh and South West Ross were appointed.  Hub North Scotland Ltd were appointed by NHS Highland to deliver the new facility in Broadford and architectural firms Portree-based Rural Design and Oberlanders from Edinburgh won the contract for the design.  Balfour Beatty were appointed as contractors in September 2017.

Tracy Ligema, NHS Highland’s Deputy Director of Operations for North and West and Project Director for the redesign said: “Approval of the Outline Business Case and the preliminary design are important milestones for the project”.

hub North Scotland Chief Executive Michael Padzinksi said: “We are extremely pleased to be working with NHS Highland and look forward to developing proposals with local people that will ensure a top-class facility is delivered for communities of Skye, Lochalsh and South West Ross.”

The event is part of the planning process for the new hospital. NHS Highland submitted apre-planning application in July 2017. If the work progresses as planned it should see work start on the new hospital in 2019 with completion by the end of 2020.

The board of NHS Highland approved the Outline Business Case when it met today, 28th November 2017). The Business case will now be considered by the Scottish Government Capital Investment Group.
