Update on Kilbeg Project October 2013

Added on 02 October 2013

We have asked for an update from Sabhal Mor Ostaig on the latest developments from the Kilbeg Project. This is the email:

Many thanks for the invitation to brief the Community Council further on progress with the first phase of development at Kilbeg and here follows a few lines by way of a summary as you suggest.

Highland Council earlier in September granted Detailed Planning Permission for a new College building of 1,050 square metres internal floor area across two floors to be located next to the existing Àrainn Ostaig campus and sited parallel with the main A851 road. This will provide new office, teaching and craft workshop accommodation which in turn will allow for the original stone steading building and subsequent accommodation courtyard extension at Àrainn Ostaig to be renovated and reconfigured as a stand-alone Conference Centre as part of a future phase of development at Kilbeg. It is intended that work will begin on constructing the new building early in 2014 and Highland Council is currently considering a simultaneous Detailed Planning application for the associated infrastructure and services works (access road, drainage, electricity and water connections) which it is intended will begin on site by the end of 2013.

I attach here the architect’s impressions of how the new College building will look. There are also currently 3 display panels on public display in the downstairs dining room of Àrainn Chaluim Chille (opposite the stair and next to the lift) which the community are welcome to come and view and ask any questions.

As well as progressing with Phase 1, the College is also in early discussions with Highland Council on the possibility of progressing with future phases of development around new community and college sports and recreational facilities and a small development of mixed housing provision. The Community Council will be provided with further details in due course as these discussions develop.
